Housing mouse colonies in individually ventilated cages (IVCs) has significantly improved housing density, environmental control, and biosecurity. However, the design of many IVCs can make it difficult to include enrichment tools such as running wheels within the home cage. The Maze Engineers’ wireless low-profile mouse running wheel addresses this challenge with an innovative solution that enables accurate monitoring of running activity in most standard IVCs. Equipped with a specially engineered wheel surface and a wireless transmitter, the system seamlessly sends activity data from the home cage to a computer—no wires or cables required.

Our USB modules connect up to 40 wheels to one computer with the capacity to add 4 modules per computer.

For data analysis, our interactive software allows user’s to analyze multiple behavioral, locomotion, and motor-related metrics.

Features

Monitor circadian rhythms, activity, and locomotion while providing environmental enrichment for free-moving or instrumented/tethered subjects. Track running activity to analyze correlation with behavioral changes

  • Designed to fit seamlessly into most standard ventilated mouse rack cages
  • Each module can monitor up to 40 wheels, with four modules connecting to a single computer
  • Energy-efficient and nearly maintenance-free, powered by three included AAA batteries
  • Cost-effective and economical
  • Simple to clean: Disconnect the wheel surface from the plastic support base

Data analysis, including running data:

  • Wheel Revolutions: Each complete rotation of the wheel is recorded, providing a direct measure of activity levels.

  • Time-Stamped Activity: The system logs the exact timing of each revolution, allowing for precise temporal analysis of activity patterns.

  • Running Duration and Speed: By analyzing the frequency and timing of revolutions, users can determine the duration of running bouts and estimate running speed.
